Leadership Recruitment

Welcome from Dr Susan Gilby, Chief Executive Officer and Peter Folwell, Lead Governor

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in becoming the next Chair of the Board and the Council of Governors for the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking for an ambitious and inspirational new Chair who will role model inclusive leadership to support the delivery of our vision – “Delivering NHS care locally that makes our community and our staff proud”.  We hope that you will be excited by learning more about this unique opportunity to provide leadership to critical services at such an important time in the history of the NHS.

We don’t think there has ever been a more interesting or challenging time to join the Countess of Chester. After years of growth, and now living through a global pandemic, the NHS is facing its biggest ever financial challenge alongside significant changes in how our services are commissioned and delivered. The impact of Covid-19 on our staff and our populations will be felt for years to come; however, through this our staff have demonstrated their resilience and a significant ability to innovate.  We have found new and efficient ways to ensure we continue to safely provide effective care to our patients. We need to continue to rethink how we work effectively with our partners and our communities to ensure we deliver sustainable health and care services to our populations in the future particularly as many of our population are aging.

As Chair of our Board you will provide leadership to a significant public service organisation and play a significant role in shaping our future direction.  You will Chair both the Board and the Council of Governors who are drawn from our membership and include public, staff and partner members.  As Chair you will quickly build credibility with our staff, patients and governors as well as at a senior level across our wider system partners as we work to integrate health and care services in a way that improves outcomes, access and wellbeing for our populations.

We are interested in hearing from established and experienced Board leaders who can demonstrate sound judgement, political acumen, and strategic influence.  Previous Chair experience and an understanding of the public sector with some recent experience on an NHS Board probably as a Non-Executive Director will be valuable.  We are very keen to welcome fresh thinking from candidates with broad related sector backgrounds. We are seeking a values-driven, inspiring leader; an exceptional communicator who can quickly build personal credibility in a complex stakeholder environment.  This role will require a leader with a successful track record of leading complex, transformational change working across organisational boundaries, with the ability to engage others in a vision for continuous improvement.  This is an excellent opportunity to use your energy, skills, and experience to make a lasting difference to the health and wellbeing of people served by our Trust now and in the future.

We are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse Board team at the Countess of Chester and would therefore particularly welcome applications from people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities whose perspective is currently underrepresented in our Board.

We hope that this exceptional opportunity appeals to you and if you would like to explore it further, we would encourage you to read further on this site and contact our retained consultants at GatenbySanderson; Emma Pickup or Julia St. Clare on 07807 631 564 for a more detailed discussion about the opportunity and the recruitment process.

We look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes

Dr Susan Gilby, Chief Executive Officer and Peter Folwell, Lead Governor
